How do you use social media?

I don’t know if it’s just an age thing, or if I’m just a grumpy old man these days. But social media has just gotten worse as time has gone on.

Back in my younger days, I joined Myspace (Yes I’m that old). It was a good laugh. You set up your own profiles and tried to create the best profile out of your friends. In all fairness, it made me learn some coding so I could make it look ‘cool’. But I do think that’s where the downfall also kind of start. People tried to get into the top 8 friends. Whatever the number was, they used it as a negotiation tactic. They would say, ‘If you don’t do this, I’ll take you out of my top friends’ sort of thing. Myspace is also where I got catfished hard. But that’s a story for another time.

Eventually, Myspace became dated and Facebook took off. I still remember all my friends moving to Facebook. They asked me to come over as well because it’s ‘better’. I was reluctant, mainly because I couldn’t be bothered. Eventually peer pressure took over and I made my Facebook profile.

At first, it was fun. I met a few good people on there. Some of them I have never met in real life. I still talk to them every now and again. On the other hand, also met people I wish I didn’t. But with the same as Myspace, Facebook started to go stale. Click baity articles, cryptic status’ from friends. Begging for attention, then when you ask, they don’t want to talk. I often found myself scrolling for ages in the mornings, just reading essentially nothing. Doom scrolling is what I think they call it.

So after thinking about it for a while, I decided to get rid of my Facebook profile. I’ve never looked back. The only social media I use now is Instagram. But honestly, I find myself doom scrolling on there, so I do often think about deactivating that as well. So many people rely on social media to communicate. Would I be cutting myself off from the little world I’m involved in now?

I doubt I’ll ever get back on the social media train. I’m too old for it now. But I do worry about the younger generation’s future. Social media is full of false information and unrealistic images.

But in short, social media…I very rarely use it.
